In 2003 'La Grand Fe' was a tired establishment with a colourful history but badly in need of some TLC. It's redeeming feature however was it's prime location in the heart of the old walled city. We acquired the hotel early 2004 and re-opened in 2005 following a total re-build. We chose a 'republican era' architectural style to reflect the age of the building which dates from 1935. Since then, with hard work and and some luck we have been featured in the NYT and have won various awards. Our success comes from a personal management style and our attention to detail, such as printing our own street maps. These display the locations of airline offices, ATMs that accept all cards, supermarkets and (our) recommended restaurants. Although we no longer man the front desk and carry the bags we still remain very close to the business.

The hotel has a variety of bedrooms on three floors (note no elevator), some with private balconies overlooking the street and the park beyond. The balconies are of sufficient size to be able to sit out and enjoy Cartagena's exhuberant street life. These bedrooms have both inner and outer doors opening onto the balcony to ensure good noise isolation. Our other upper floor rooms open onto an internal courtyard and all are set well back from the street. The bedrooms on the ground floor are furnished to exactly the same standard as upper floor rooms but they are adjacent to the patio where we serve breakfast. They therefore lose some privacy at this time of day and are lower priced. Several rooms can take a third guest and all rooms will accommodate an infant bed or cot. Our bedrooms are furnished with silent air conditioning units, ceiling fans, minibars, room safes and direct-dial telephones. There is free WiFi access in all rooms and a guest PC workstation. The bathrooms have high quality finishings and hair driers. The hotel has several comfortable seating areas and a roof-top terrace where you can catch the breeze, view the city skyline and cool off in the pool-jacuzzi. We serve a full cooked breakfast every day with varied menus.

Many visitors to Cartagena like to escape the city centre for a while and we offer a beach villa and a sailboat as relaxing diversions. We use a secure server for internet bookings and they are received and handled directly by the hotel. Our internet rates are the lowest prices at which we sell the rooms. The booking system also displays current (real-time) room availability for any date. The hotel has a 24 hour cancellation/ early check-out Policy. If you do need to cancel we process refunds to your card provider within two working days and forward you the details. Finally we have 24 hour porterage and check-in.
